It’s been a while since the last Vigilant update, so to whet your appetite for all things Nullspace, here’s a sketch of our favorite pirate DJ, Jaden Stormchaser, just chilling out to the music, by my friend Jed aka Vagrant Angel.

Radio Free Morningstar on Nullspace Aetherband 32

Hi guys! I was playing with my graphics programs today and came up with this wallpaper for Radio Free Morningstar,! It depicts Jaden Stormchaser’s satellite pirate radio station, the Morningstar, hovering above Central City in geosynchronous Nullspace orbit, rendered in glorious ray-tracer-ific 3D! A translucent bubble of Free Nullspace, it gives Sentinel Jaden a 360 degree view, perfect for spotting incursions from the Far Reaches!

Kenji. Slacker, Hacker, Reverse Engineer.

By now I hope you’ve read Episode 2 of Vigilant. If you haven’t, I strongly advise that you read it IMMEDIATELY. Then check back here.

Kenji and Gizmo are two of Jaden’s friends (although the proper term would be senpai) who belong to the Reverse Engineers. Instead of pushing the envelope of Nullspace technology through the normal R&D process, they prefer to take anything that exists in Nullspace, take it apart in the shop, and rebuild it and make it better, if they can.

Sometimes this works. Sometimes it blows up in their faces.

Kenji in particular is known for taking apart hazardous Nullspace materials, which explains the Icon on his head.

On the other hand, Gizmo often builds elegant devices that seem almost magical. That is, if they work when you switch them on. (Plus she’s got that moe geek techie thing going for her.)

We’ll be seeing both of them a lot as the story progresses!

As for the song choice by Jaden in Panel 3, A Rainbow in Curved Air is an actual song from 1969 by Terry Riley, who belongs to the Minimalist School of music.

Terry Riley was a strong influence on Pete Townshend from The Who, and A Rainbow in Curved Air strongly influences the legendary keyboard intro for the song ‘Baba O’Riley’, used as the opening theme for CSI: NY. The title itself is a nod to Tery Riley, and the song can even be heard on a particular radio station in GTAIV called The Journey.

So enough with the music geekery. What does the actual song sound like?
